Beth Wood, 84, of Detroit finishes the US half marathon at the 36th Annual Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon in Detroit Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013.

An astounding performance by a master’s runner in Sunday’s marathon belongs to a familiar name.

Doug Kurtis, 61, of Livonia — former race director of the Free Press marathon, and credited with making the momentous course changes that brought the race across the Ambassador Bridge for the first time in 1999 — returned to the race he won six years in a row, from 1987 to 1992.

On Sunday, he ran his 200th marathon in under 3 hours. Kurtis logged a time of 2:59:03.
